batukarang_chefHe is the man behind the menus, the culinary creator at Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa, Executive Chef Matthias! Originally from Munich, Germany, Matthias has certainly brought some of that German “perfection” element to his gastronomical work, with the luxury food standards the guests and staff are loving experiencing. Having been a Chef for 18 years, Matthias’ original motivation was to have a job that both honed his creativity where he could also travel. He shares that his parents wanted him to have a solid job that would be hard to lose, and as Matthias says that people “always eat, get sick, & [move on]” so it’s been a safe profession for him! His goal was to be a Chef on every continent, with his resume already having worked in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, the Cook Islands, and now Bali. He has Africa and the Americas still too fulfil his dreams! Matthias’ specialty is French & Mediterranean cuisine, where he likes to fusion whatever local cuisine he is working with. So what does a Chef eat when out of the kitchen? Well this one, his hearty German & Italian of course! And with the selection of cuisines he has worked with, what does Matthias like best about working at Batu Karang on Nusa Lembongan? He likes the range of food offering at all three restaurant venues, Muntigs Bar & Restaurant, The Deck Cafe & Bar, & The Howff Whsiky, Gin, & Wine Bar. He says that with the variety we offer, he is constantly challenged every day and is also is very proud of the staff, as he loves teaching and sharing knowledge. The staff must appreciate him too, as on his birthday they surprised him by finding where he lived and showing up at his house with a birthday cake singing Happy Birthday! A very special surprise indeed. At the end of the day, Matthias says he is still “the son of a mum who wants him to come home,” but in the meantime Matthias and his wife are enjoying the friendly Balinese people & the new culture, and all the beauties and challenges that come with it. Please come visit us for some of Matthias’ creative dishes and shared perfection.

If you haven’t heard about The Howff Whisky, Gin, & Wine Bar at Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa, now you will know. After a wee bit of Scottish blood, sweat, & tears, the doors finally opened in December, and it has been receiving nothing but spectacular reviews. With those “hard to find” gins & whiskys, with unique & carefully shaken cocktails created by our Italian mixologist, The Howff promises something completely unlike you have ever experienced. With a secret prohibition-style venue set over the rocks, and a view of the surf breaks and the magical Mount Agung, The Howff is truly a venue like no other in the world.

Also complementing the beautiful cocktail and spirits menu is an international tapas menu with fresh land & sea dishes in sweet & savoury flavours. It is common for the guests to visit The Howff & forget where in the world they are, & get lost in the experience of the art of The Howff. With the skilled bartenders and service styled in striking Scottish fashion, the candle-lit atmosphere will be perfect for a pre- or post-dinner drink at Muntigs Bar & Restaurant. Ask for directions to find your way to the bar over the rocks, and transport yourself to somewhere else just for a while.

The Balinese are never short of a ceremony or a celebration, and this coming April 5 marks the start of one of the most important of the Balinese Hindu holidays of the year. At Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa, The Deck Cafe & Bar, Muntigs Bar & Restaurant, The Howff Whisky, Gin, & Wine Bar, & Lulur Spa, we are very proud to honour the local traditions of Galungan. Galungan is the festival that celebrates Dharma’s victory over Adharma (good over evil), the time during the 210-day Balinese calendar when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth. During the 10 day period, the family must be hospitable to the spirits through rituals of prayers and offerings to welcome the spirits to the material realm. Also lining the streets are the “penjor” (bamboo poles with offerings hanging from the ends).

The festival is marked at the end of the 10 days with Kuningan, when the ancestral spirits leave the Earth on April 15. Galungan and Kuningan on Nusa Lembongan are full of colour, ritual, and celebration, and should you wish to participate in any of the local festivities, please do not hesitate to ask any of our staff on your visit with us. And enjoy!

Sometimes even cocktails need “facelifts” too, just to keep life interesting. But what to do with an old faithful favourite of Muntigs Bar & Restaurant at Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa with the Lychee Mojito that was so treasured and loved? The burning question, do we leave well enough alone (if it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right?), or do we go out on a limb to see if we can make it even better than before. Well, with a dash of this, a little more of that, add some house-dried fresh Lembongan coconut for a sprinkle and there we go…. The brand new “Loose Lychees Sink Ships”! It is just. so. fresh… And delicious for those hot days under the Nusa Lembongan sun. Thirst-quenching, just the right balance of sweet, citrus, and notes of lychee, you really are in the perfect place to be drinking something like this. Go on, have a few of these, get the cocktail-fueled conversation going and see where the day or night takes you, sailors!
